Practical Monaco

Where To Stay

The Metropole Palace re-creates the grandeur of the Belle Époque era with its lavishly appointed suites. The competitively priced Abela Monaco in Fontvieille overlooks the garden and marina.

Other deluxe hotels include the 619-room Loews Monte Carlo, with four restaurants, swimming and spa facilities, cabaret show and casino; the Mirabeau, highlighting traditional service and terraces overlooking the sea; the Hermitage, decorated in the Belle Époque manner; and the Hôtel de Paris, with its noted Louis XV restaurant.

SBM’s Monte Carlo Beach Hotel, renovated in 1993, boasts 45 rooms with a 1920s beach-resort ambiance (May through October). The attractively priced Forte Grand Beach Plaza is operated like a seaside resort. It has a private beach and three pools.

Arriving & Departing: There is nonstop service from the U.S. to Nice, 30 minutes away by car or seven minutes by helicopter. A shuttle service operates daily between Nice International Airport and Monaco from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. The marina accommodates any type of vessel. Monaco is served by express trains from Paris and Rome.

Getting Around: Only residents’ cars are allowed on the Rock. Luxury taxi cabs are available. An eight-ride bus ticket costs about $6. There is frequent rail and bus service to Nice and other spots along the Riviera. Bus fare between Nice and Monaco is about $15 each way.
