The Marriott is hardly number one on St. Kitts as it just officially opened last month and has not earned that status. In fact, I do not know if there is a number one; as it is all a matter of taste.
There are many spots on the island for all sorts of tastes and budgets. Either Ottley's or Rawlins Plantation Inn or the Golden Lemon are seen as the fanciest (and definitely most expensive by far) places on the island. The only thing is that if you like the beach, or to be more centrally located to anything, these places are way out of the way and a rental car is necessary or save a lot of money for taxis.
Island Paradise Beach Village is an great condo place to stay. It is self catering. Nice location and centrally located in Frigate Bay. The Sealofts are real nice homes on stilts and are also beachfront as is IPBV.
TBR, Timothy Beach Resort is tbe only resort beachfront to the Caribbean's calm waters. My husband and I really like this resort. The prices are very fair and the resort is clean, very nice staff and a good restaurant.
There are also private villas available; Half Moon Villa is one of them. Real nice villa in a perfect spot with a great view.
There are other hotels, Bird Rock, OTI, etc., which are closer to the capitol Basseterre.
Let's not forget Turtle Beach's apartment which is directly across from Nevis. Excellent location right on the beach.
It is all a matter of what you are looking for and how much you want to spend.
