Hi Debi,
Wherever you stay in the Frigate Bay area, it's a very short drive (no more than 5 minutes) over to South Friars beach, which has always been *wonderful* for swimming.Trust me, it's hard to get me out of the water there except to slide up to the bar for a drink! One of my favorite beaches anywhere.
Where to stay is really more up to your personal taste...this trip coming up, I'm trying out the Marriott as the price was just too good to pass up, especially as I'm really on a budget this time! I've stayed numberous times over the years at Frigate Bay Beach Hotel (or Frigate Bay Resort, or however they've renamed it these days). They have a great pool for lap swimming and a nice swim-up bar, but we stopped staying there when maintenance started getting *very* lax and the units started to have a lot going wrong with them. I don't know if that's still the case or if new management has improved that.
For the past few trips I was staying at Horizons Villas, which has some lovely spacious villas, an ok pool, and an excellent restaurant (though it's for dinner only--but all units have full kitchens). Unfortunately you're a bit at the whim of the condo owners there--each one is pretty different in furnishings and styles, and again we started having a lot of maintenance issues that were turning us off (broken clothes washer, broken TVs, windows that wouldn't close & lock properly, missing basic utensils in the kitchens...and getting things actually fixed during the course of one stay was very hit and miss) That and our favorite unit got pulled out of the rental pool. So I'm not sure I'd recommend them to anyone else at this point in time.
Stayed once at Jack Tarr Village. Checked out after two days there and moved to another hotel--that should tell you how I felt about it.
Anyway, just my impressions on the places I've stayed in the area.
