We had a mountain view when we went on Marriott points in April and I enjoyed the view - those rooms are on the opposite side of the hotel from the ocean. Either room is equally close to the ocean. The houses might be slightly closer, but honestly, everything is about the same. We had the option of staying in the guest houses upon arrival but opted to stay in the hotel because of the gorgeous atmosphere.
