JOLLY BEACH RESORT, ANTIGUA
TARGETS PREVIOUSLY UNTAPPED HISPANIC MARKET
-- “CALIENTE” WEEKEND ON COURSE --
St. John’s, ANTIGUA, January 23, 2003 – This week the all-inclusive Jolly Beach Resort welcomes a 10-member crew from Univision, which will be on island January 23rd through 27th to film two installments of the highly popular hour-long music and dance program “Caliente”. The shows will involve a local cast of over 100 dancers, musicians, models, fashion designers, production assistants and others.
The project will bring together Antigua’s largest hotel, Jolly Beach Resort; one of its owners, Antigua’s ABI Financial Group; American Airlines, and Univision - the largest Spanish-language television network in the USA and the fifth largest USA television network overall. All parties view this as a golden opportunity to showcase Antigua to a huge international audience, and tap into a relatively unexplored market for the resort. The United States Census Bureau announced on January 21st that the Hispanic population is now the nation’s largest minority group – numbering roughly 37 million. “With the expansion of our sales and marketing program for the Resort, we recognize the Latino market as one we clearly need to make a specific effort to reach, not only in the U.S. but worldwide,” says ABI Financial Group Managing Director McAlister Abbott, who initiated the project.
“Caliente” is broadcast across the U.S. on Univision every Saturday afternoon, and distributed internationally by Protele, Inc., the largest syndicator of Spanish language television programmes in the world. The first Jolly Beach “Caliente” installment is scheduled to air March 15th.
Antigua’s dancers and dance enthusiasts will have a chance to perform before millions of viewers worldwide. Forty-five dancers were selected following a lively and entertaining audition at the Jolly Beach Resort on January 5th. Guests of the hotel pulled up chairs and enjoyed the action as dancers swirled, samba’d and generally had a whale of a time for nearly two hours.
A second audition on January 23rd selected the 35 remaining dancers required for the production. Local fashion designer Calvin Southwell, limbo dancer Mr. Moves, Gemonites Steel Orchestra and two local jam bands will also be featured in “Caliente”. To promote Antigua’s varied visitor attractions, additional footage will be shot of interesting activities around the island.
Jolly Beach Resort is set on a scenic 40-acre estate with a mile of superb white sand beach and an 8,000 sq. ft. signature Fantasy Pool including waterfalls and a Jacuzzi, curving around a choice of restaurants and bars. All rooms are air-conditioned and face the ocean; each has a patio or balcony, direct-dial phone, cable TV, hair-dryer and safe. The all-inclusive rate for Standard accommodation is $150 per person, per night based on double occupancy now through April 15, 2003 and from $140 per person April 16, 2003 through December 20, 2003, including all food, drinks and most activities.
